LEVELS OF RESTORATION FOR GLAZED AND
UNGLAZED CERAMIC OBJECTS, AND CERTAIN OTHER DECORATIVE ARTWORKS:
LEVEL A - -the most extensive
- as close to an invisible restoration as possible
- a fine degree of detail, such as crazing and stippling,
is reproduced
- a massively damaged item is less likely to achieve the
results that a less damaged item will
- restoration is scientifically detectable
- conservation glazes are not fired at the high temperatures
of original firings
LEVEL B - -very good results
- uses most of the level A techniques
- all missing areas are completed, hand-painted, and glazed
- achieves 80% of the effect for approximately half
the cost of an A level
- very presentable when viewed from arm’s length
- close scrutiny will discern subtle traces of restoration
LEVEL C - - precise repair rather than a restoration; a conservation
approach
- object is made structurally sound
- rebuilt areas are pigmented to a close color match
- hand painting addresses limited foreground areas to complete
obvious patterns
- can be very subtle under certain circumstances such as
dark colored glaze or busy foreground
- break lines will show
GLASS AND CRYSTAL RESTORATION:
Due to the nature of glass, break lines do not fully disappear,
as planes of refraction will remain. Happily, many repairs can
still achieve a subtle result. Clear, colored, cased, painted,
gilded, cut and blown glass can all be repaired.
- structurally sound
- water tight
- rim chips eliminated
