SHIPPING TIPS

The 3 conditions that cause most problems and how to avoid them:
  1. SHOCK — a moving package comes in contact with a stationary object, or several objects in the same carton come in contact with each other. Adequate cushioning must be used to prevent this. At least 2” of packing material should surround each object in the carton. Bubble wrap works well. Wrap each piece separately and place toward the center of the carton. Stuff cushioning material (packing peanuts) firmly around, over, and between items. The further you keep fragile items away from the corners and sides of the box, the less chance there is of damage.

  2. VIBRATION — mostly occurs during over-the-road vehicle transportation. Delicate items are especially at risk. The solution is the damping effect of cushioning material. The key is to prevent the contents from shaking inside the package. Proper packing material, such as bubble wrap and packing peanuts, will prevent or reduce the transmission of vibration. Even tiny bits and slivers must be prevented from rubbing and grinding against each other, incurring further damage.

  3. COMPRESSION — cartons must be strong enough to withstand the pressure and weight of other packages. New doublewalled cartons are best. Test weights are usually printed on the bottom of a carton. Check to make sure it is sturdy enough. Cartons that have punctures, tears, rips, or corner damage should not be used. Make sure cartons are large enough to allow for adequate cushioning on all sides of the item(s). Double boxing offers the most protection. Carefully pack and seal the inner carton. Place it in the outer carton, stuffing at least 2” of cushioning material between the 2 cartons on all sides.
TEMPERATURE CHANGE - must also be considered with certain items such as antique glass. Cracks are likely to run if the piece is subjected to sudden temperature changes. We recommend ground transportation to avoid the chill of an air cargo hold, especially during summer months when unloading would cause a sudden cold to hot shift.
